Another week of running in Japan. I am trying to take it easy and to commence training again on December 25 th.

This current post is written via my delux super modern cherry red coloured new iPad. 😎

MONDAY : A good start to the week. I ran what for me was a solid 12 km. I tried to run a little faster with my last 4 kms run at 5.22, 5.22, 5.10, 4.53. Sure this is not fast per se ,but I was running over a bridge and had to run onto the road to avoid a truck. SO in my current state this was not too bad. Weight 67.6 Kgm….Blood Pressure 122/72. Wore my old heavy shoes with orthotics. Happy  with this as I actually pushed myself out of my comfort zone.

TUESDAY : Ran a steady 5 km with Tamami San and then ran 6 hill sprints. Weight 67.4  Kgm. EAch hill about 48 seconds.Found this reasonably hard.

WEDNESDAY : Good  solid morning session in the gym in the morning. In the evening joined with Namban Team mates to run reps  in the park. We ran 2000,3×1000,2×500. In the dark I missed the finish for the last 500m and carried on for another 300m. 😦  Certainly I am woefully slow. Long way to go.😥 More of this is certainly necessary.

THURSDAY : Nothing in the morning but solid gym session in the afternoon followed by 5 km with Tamami. Probably not such a good idea to combine gym and running so close together. Felt pretty poor at the start. Finished OK even if I did feel a little sick.

FRIDAY : Good Japanese friend from Melbourne in Tokyo for a funeral this week end. Ran over the Rainbow Bridge with her and Tamami. She is only a 3.30 marathon runner but just left me way behind running up the incline on the bridge. Actually I felt really bad at a photo stop and almost fainted. Ran about 12 km over all. It was probably more a race than a social run.😮 Felt sick. But it was great to run with her and hopefully made her feel a little better.

SATURDAY: Joined Namban team mates for hill training. They are called The Hill Tribe. After about a 2 km (?) warm up we ran 8 hills over a bit over one minute each. Found this hard and was very much at the back of the pack.In fact I was second last for most runs although I picked up a couple of places in the last couple of runs. I will do better next week. I lack both speed and strength.

BONEKAI: This is a Japanese end of year party. Namban Rengo hold one every year.A very interesting and enjoyable evening. Great to see fellow team mates in something other than running gear.

NEXT WEEK: Another rest and recovery week. Not much planned other than something called RunLIsh….combines Running and English ( true!)…on Wednesday…and a Race on Friday ( public holiday)…and of course The Hill Tribe on Saturday. Perhaps the hills Tamami and I run on Tuesday’s are too short…will try and make these longer and harder.

RUNNING: Trying to get back to it.

After the Melbourne Marathon over a month ago I am trying to get back to running. However I am finding this increasingly difficult. First I have a very sore heel which prevents me from pushing off my left foot. And secondly I am running the Boston Marathon in April. My plan is to start training January 4 th. Possibly I am lacking in motivation.Maybe I am just lazy.

For the LAST WEEK I have been trying to run. But maybe I am lazy or maybe just the pain of running is stopping me.

This is what I have done last 7 days.

WEDNESDAY : Ran with my Tokyo Running club. In the dark and on paths with about 60 team mates.

2000 x 2…..1000 x 1….500 x 2 I ran about 9.30 for the 2km and 4.20 for the one km. I am slow I know. Being on a path I did not know did not help. ( excuse)

THURSDAY : Ran 5 km with Mi chan. Leg very sore. Strong finish. New training shoes.

OUT to dinner Thursday night. See Photo. Lots of nice things to eat.

FRIDAY : Ran 5 km with Mi Chan. Leg hurt. Weight 67.6 Kgm !! ( Use big night out as an excuse). Did a couple of surges near the end. If I can sense the finish I can to some extent ignore the pain in my leg.

SATURDAY:Gym and short jog. BP117/79 ( very good for me ) HR 46. Good enough session.

SUNDAY: Went to our house in Chiba and ran some hills. Really really hard. Felt very ill. Walked down part as too steep to even jog. Leg hurt. 42 minutes actual running. I thought I may die….but that is just be wimpy.

Tamami said I was white then I turned yellow….lovely !

MONDAY: Chiba house. Shorter run….starting with 12 minutes down hill which I felt was a lot easier….then ran up hill for 12 minutes which I found very hard….but I did it….total running time 24.06 More pain in leg. This can be a nice run in happier circumstances.

TUESDAY : Back in Tokyo. Gym plus short run. Weight 66.3 Kgm which is better.Blood pressure 125/83 ( good for me ).Heart Rate 42. Again good for me as I was feeling a bit ill for most of the day. Set of 300 stomach crunches….probably a bit much but I was feeling a little down so I needed something to add to the flavor of the day. 🙂 Plus some push ups which were fun.

TOMORROW is club running….but it is said it will be raining…..I hate running on paths and am not too keep to run in the dark either. Rain will pretty much wipe this off. Maybe I have just lost the will power. 😦

Hard 20kms

It is pretty sad when a 20 Km run knocks you about. Found today’s ‘long’ run really tested me.

My cunning plan today was to drive 10 Km away from home… 10km fairly hard… up with Tamami  …do a U turn….run 10km back to the car. Total 20km.

Its a fairly hilly course and the Local Council were doing some thing ( no idea what) to the path so I was forced to take a long….well fairly long….detour which added three extra hills….actually 3 hills up and another down.

ImageI met Tamami at the appointed spot…she wondered what had happened to me….and we ran back to the car. However I started to feel pretty rough about 17 Km. I pretty much plugged on at around the same pace and finished ok but didn’t gain a lot of joy from the last few Kms.

Does not bode well for running a marathon if I feel rough before 20. However I have a few half marathon on the list before I run the Melbourne Marathon.

I will train harder and do better.

Funny Hill running

31 degrees here in Melbourne. Time for some hill sprints to start the week off.

Ran my usual 3km route to the base of the hill. I hate the heat these days and did not really feel that great when Tamami and I got there.

Ran the first 6 hills quite well equal to mImagey best time twice ( or maybe I broke it…not sure). BUT on the 7 th sprint my legs started to feel a bit wobbly and about 30 m from the time I found it a little hard to see.

The 8 th and last hill is the one Tamami traditionally challenges me and goes all out to beat me…..not that beating a lumbering slow boots like me is much. I was ahead at half way but she just snuck by with 20m to go and took the Gold. 🙂

110 push ups today and 300 stomach crunches.

Less than two weeks to Canberra marathon.

Tired leads= hill sprints

Legs feeling a bit heavy today so some hill sprints called for. 35 Km on Sunday and hard gym session on Monday plus fast run on Tuesday and solid enough run last night all combined with the warm conditions to make me feel heavy and slow.

Ran a slow plodding 3km with Tamami to the HILL.

After the first two run ups my legs started to feel a bit strange. After 6 hills my legs started to wobble a bit.

Tamami ran down the hill after each sprint. I normally just stagger down like a drunken koala but because Tamami was running down I was pretty much forced to follow.

Finished with 8 hill sprints.

Felt a little dizzy as I jogged…oh so slowly….home…

Image225 stomach crunches and 60 push ups today.

Weight 64.0….this is my goal weight.

First attempt at HILL RUNNING.

Actually I have run hills before. In 1969 I went down to Portsea and ran up sand hills. I have heard that hill reps help your speed whilst at the same time not thrash your legs.

After the half marathon on Sunday and the run last night my legs still felt heavy. My knee still hurts but after I start running the pain is a lot less.

I ran about 3 Km and then ran up a hill 10 times. Each run was only 35 seconds or less but it felt hard enough. After each run I walked down. I am sure 40 years ago I would have jogged down. Maybe one day I will do so again.

Not a bad start to my hill sessions.

120 push ups and 450 stomach crunches.

Weight 65.0.ImageThat’s a bit better.
